Strategies for Supervising Physical Education Teachers
Are you responsible for supervising physical educators in your school or district? Physical education is a particularly unique subject given the open space teaching areas and physical learning goals. The national standards in physical education were revised in April 2024. The revision represents a significant change in direction for how PE is taught and what is learned. Coupled with the new Connecticut plan for teacher evaluation, and the rising concern for the physical, mental and emotional health of our students, CAS is offering this half-day workshop in support of administrators during this changing time. In this free session administrators will be brought up-to-date on teaching, evaluating, supervising and goal setting in PE. The session will be led by Joe Velardi, the Connecticut State Coordinator for Health and Physical Education. Participants will: *Clarify the goals and direction for your program. *Explore instructional strategies that foster intrinsic motivation in students to live healthy and active lifestyles. *Dive into the new National Standards for Physical Education. *Clarify the qualities of a modern physical education curriculum and set relevant and worthwhile goals with your physical education teachers. *Understand the appropriate use of fitness testing. *Explore appropriate and inappropriate teaching strategies in PE. *Differentiate learning goals for elementary, middle and high school programs. *Learn observation cues that are unique to the physical education lessons. *Gain a better understanding of the perspective of your physical education teacher and explore the factors which motivate physical education teachers to change. *Gain insight into hiring quality physical education teachers.
