Dear Legal Mailbag: As with most schools, at my school I have a well-intentioned and hardworking group of parents who want to support the school in any way they can. Within the parental ranks, there are various volunteer and booster groups. They generally have the best of intentions, but at times they give me fits. I recently discovered that a small group of parents affiliated with a larger group gained access to the group federal tax identification number. These parents opened up a bank account with a different name and are conducting fundraisers without input from the main body. Is this appropriate under IRS guidelines? Better yet, is it legal? IMPORTANT REMINDER: Scholar-Athlete Banquet Has New Time and New Format
The CAS-CIAC Scholar Athlete Awards Banquet will begin at 4:30 p.m. sharp on Sunday May 5 at the Aqua Turf in Plantsville, CT. This is a change from previous years. The format of the program has also changed, with all awards being presented prior to dinner. The New England state associations of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) will be hosting the third annual New England Student Leadership Conference from July 16-19, 2013 at Stonehill College in Easton, MA. This conference is a four-day, residential event designed to help talented, committed young people become better citizens who will be positive, contributing adults and role models for youth. More
Does Your Advisory Program Need a "Tune-up"?
CAS is pleased to offer a half-day workshop on June 11, 2013 for school teams with established advisory programs to undergo a structured review and evaluation of their current program. Participants will revisit the components of their advisory program and refine their goals, grouping, scheduling, curriculum, advisor roles and responsibilities, materials and resources, and linkages to other school programs. CIAC Approves New Formula For Tournament Placement
Last month, the CIAC Board of Control approved a new metric for determining tournament classes. The new formula, which will take into account prior tournament success, will be voluntary for each sport committee and will apply only to schools that draw students from outside their district boundaries. REMINDER: All Varsity Scores Must Be Posted Within 24 Hours
In order to provide accurate sports rankings and standings on CIACsports.com, CIACmobile.com and all of the league, media and other sites which pull data directly from the CIAC, it is necessary to collect scores in a more timely manner. For this reason, a change has been made requiring schools to post all Varsity results within 24 hours of contest completion. This change went into effect on April 29, 2013. More

At the end of each school year, it is custom that the Connecticut Association of Schools awards life memberships in CAS to retiring principals and assistant principals.
